Ingredients:

  • 300g elbow macaroni or other short pasta

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 1 onion, finely chopped

  • 200g Swiss cheese (Emmental or Gruyère), grated

  • 200ml cream

  • 2 apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

  • 0.5 teaspoon nutmeg

  • 1 teaspoon salt, plus more for pasta water

  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Cook the pasta in a large pot of salted boiling water according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large frying pan, heat vegetable oil over medium heat. Add sliced apples and sauté until golden brown. Remove from pan and set aside.
  4. In the same pan, melt butter over medium heat. Add chopped onions and cook until soft and translucent.
  5. Add grated Swiss cheese, cream, nutmeg, salt, and black pepper to the pan. Stir until cheese is melted and mixture is smooth and creamy.
  6. Add cooked pasta to the cheese mixture and stir until well coated.
  7. Transfer the pasta mixture to a baking dish. Arrange sautéed apples on top.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  9. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.
  10. Enjoy your delicious Älplermagronen with a side of applesauce or a green salad!
