Älplermagronen
Ingredients:
- 300g elbow macaroni or other short pasta
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 200g Swiss cheese (Emmental or Gruyère), grated
- 200ml cream
- 2 apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 0.5 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon salt, plus more for pasta water
- 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Cook the pasta in a large pot of salted boiling water according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a large frying pan, heat vegetable oil over medium heat. Add sliced apples and sauté until golden brown. Remove from pan and set aside.
- In the same pan, melt butter over medium heat. Add chopped onions and cook until soft and translucent.
- Add grated Swiss cheese, cream, nutmeg, salt, and black pepper to the pan. Stir until cheese is melted and mixture is smooth and creamy.
- Add cooked pasta to the cheese mixture and stir until well coated.
- Transfer the pasta mixture to a baking dish. Arrange sautéed apples on top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
- Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.
- Enjoy your delicious Älplermagronen with a side of applesauce or a green salad!
